Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" is one of THE most iconic collaborations, and it got a fresh new life last year thanks to Ariana Grande, who created her own song by the same name for her Eternal Sunshine album, and featured the '90s R&B stars.

Now, Brandy and Monica are opening up about reuniting on Grande's version of the track, which is nominated this year for a Grammy Best Pop Duo/Group Performance — 27 years after they released the original. Brandy and Monica's version received three Grammy nominations, including for Record of the Year, and ultimately won for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Speaking to PEOPLE of her reunion with Brandy, Monica explained, "It was nothing short of a blessing for Brandy and I not only to reconnect, but to reconnect and do something as special as this innovative version of 'The Boy Is Mine.' She and I had not seen each other for many years, so it gave us the opportunity to talk not just about the song, but life as a whole."

Brandy added that the experience "transported us back to that period of our lives and our careers — such a transformative and explosive time."

Monica also added that she loves that Ari's "Boy Is Mine" is completely different from her and Brandy's 1998 hit, explaining, "I love the fact that she did not try to remake it in the form that both Brandy and I made it in, but she created something that's her own and she used nostalgic moments from the record. That's what made it such a no-brainer for me because it felt good."
