Chance The Rapper Responds To Sexual Abuse Allegations Against His Friends

Right is right, and wrong is wrong, and Chance the Rapper is not letting the bonds of friendship blur that line.

Days after several musicians affiliated with the "Blessings" rapper were accused of sexual abuse, he took to Twitter to not only denounce their actions, but also the accused themselves. "In the past 2 days I’ve heard too many stories of domestic abuse, sexual violence and rape perpetrated by ppl I called friends," Chance wrote. "I am ashamed of yall. These stories will be amplified and your victims will receive the justice they deserve."

Chance's tweet was seemingly sparked by the public's response to Lifetime's gut-wrenching documentary Surviving R. Kellywhich he appeared in to discuss his 2015 collaboration with R. Kelly, "Somewhere in Paradise." After the three-part docu-series premiered last week, multiple Chicago women shared their stories of alleged sexual abuse by musical artists in the city's community. The stories included an alleged sexual assault by Social Experiment drummer Stix, an alleged rape by rapper Towkio, and alleged coercive sex by rapper and activist Malcolm Landon, Spin reports. All of whom are affiliated with Chance and Vic Mensa's Savemoney crew and have either released music with Chance or toured with him.

While Chance denounced his collab with Kelly in Surviving R. Kelly, saying "Making a song with R. Kelly was a mistake," he was forced to continue his apology on Twitter after the docu-series misquoted an interview he gave with Jamilah Lemieux that suggested he "didn't value the accusers' stories [because] they were black women."

"The quote was taken out of context, but the truth is any of us who ever ignored the R. Kelly stories, or ever believed he was being setup/attacked by the system (as black men often are) were doing so at the detriment of black women and girls," he explained. "I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him and for taking so long to speak out."
