VERZUZ: The Lox vs. Dipset Recap

The Lox and Dipset made history Tuesday night with the first Verzuz battle live from Madison Square Garden.

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

Jadakiss is officially the first rapper to participate in a Verzuz twice.

The Lox won because they played like a team.

It’s been clear that Dipset’s heart hasn’t been in it for years at this point.

A lot of folks considered Dipset the favorite going into the event.

While the event was technically hosted at the smaller Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, the evening definitely still had that larger-than-life feel fitting for the most famous arena in the world. After around 45 minutes of a DJ set, iconic boxing announcer Michael Buffer introduced the competitors.

The two sides took playful jabs at one another throughout the night, but the consensus was that it was D-Block who came out on top. Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch were just operating at a higher level — not only was their song selection on point, but so were the performances. While Dipset members relied on backing tracks and still managed to forget the words, The Lox faithfully recreated their greatest hits on stage. The Lox were just more cohesive overall, operating as a unit, while viewers say that Dipset fell off — at one point, literally, when Jim Jones pulled a move straight out of the old roadrunner cartoons and walked into the air off of the stage.

The trash talk and on stage antics were in a league of their own. At one point, Juelz’s bandana was snatched off of his head. At another, Cam’ron and Freaky Zekey mocked The Lox by robotically marching around on stage.

Despite D-Block’s dominance, it was the fans who really came out on top. Both groups soaked in a lot of love on the stage and made it clear they had a mutual respect for one another. Next month, both Dipset and The Lox, along with State Property, will hit the road for the Rap Superheroes Tour.
