When lawmakers brought up bringing back protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries in an Oval Office meeting on Thursday, Donald Trump reportedly got angry and referred to those countries using profanity.
According to two people briefed on the meeting, Trump said, "Why are we having all these people from [expletive]hole countries come here?," referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African countries. Then Trump said the U.S. should instead allow more people from countries like Norway. Trump met the prime minister of that country on Wednesday.
Trump's remarks shocked some lawmakers, according to people familiar with their responses.
A White House spokesman initially declined to comment on Trump's statements. A White House official said that Senators Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin suggested cutting the visa lottery program in half and to give priority to those nations already in the system. (The Washington Post)
